Review/Crítica: Coffee, Gin, and Murder: A guide to quarantine in 24 m2 (ENG/ESP)

 

During the long global lockdown in the 2020 Spring, when the world was stopped and the return of operatic life seemed to be still far (still is in some countries like the US), in the city of Wuppertal the transgender woman Lucia Lucas and her wife Ariana Lucas filmed a modern version of the duet of Erda and The Wanderer (Wotan ¡, the father of gods) from the Richard Wagner's opera Siegfried. The project is called Coffee, Gin, and Murder: A guide to quarantine in 24 m2. Filming took place at the artists' own home. There are references to the Tetralogy like a painting of the three Norns designed by Ariana Lucas, a gin bottle named "Siegfried", among others. The film has a musical accompaniment by Rainer Armbrust.

The action is set in a modern city. Wotan arrives at Erda's flat in hurry. He enters by forcing the door. Then, he takes off the mask, the gloves and washes his hands: the new ritual to prevent virus. Erda is awaken from her own bed, and the duet becomes an argue, ending in her death, murdered by Wotan. After his monologue meditating about Brünnhilde and Siegfried, Wotan leaves Erda's corpse in her bed and leaves.

Lucia Lucas is an American woman transgender baritone, the first one to protagonize a production in an important opera house in her country, Don Giovanni in the Tulsa Opera. After her transition, she kept her baritone voice, and having a successful career: she has sung wagnerian and verdian roles, and she was scheduled to sing Billy Budd at the Metropolitan Opera, being the first transgender opera singer singing at its stage, sadly cancelled due to the pandemic. In this occasion, she sings Wotan. Her voice is big-volumed, with a beautiful low register, with some tones reminding John Tomlinson or Alan Titus' voices. She gives her singing the authority, experience of the veteran god.

Ariana Lucas is a great contralto, with a nice, dark-toned voice, and dramatic low notes, with an exquisite diction, rendering an unforgettable version of her entrance "Stark ruft das lied".

Almost one year later, Covid-19 is still hitting the world, and most of opera houses and venues are giving streamings, with no audience, of complete performances. In the challenging last spring, the only option was the house of the artists, which gave the music lovers some instants of music, in hard times.

Durante el largo confinamiento en la primavera pasada, cuando el mundo estaba encerrado en casa y algunos países tímidamente retomaban su vida cultural, en la ciudad de Wuppertal, el tándem artístico -matrimonio en la vida real- formado por las cantantes Lucia y Ariana Lucas filmaron un cortometraje con una adaptación del dúo del Viandante (en realidad el dios Wotan) y Erda de la ópera Siegfried, de Richard Wagner. El proyecto se llama Coffee, Gin, and Murder: A guide to quarantine in 24 m2, que en español significa "Café, ginebra y asesinato: una guía de cuarentena en 24 m2". El  rodaje tuvo lugar en la casa de las artistas, y para este montaje se han creado referencias como un dibujo de las tres nornas, por Ariana Lucas, así como una botella de ginebra con el nombre de "Siegfried", entre otras cosas. El acompañamiento de piano corre a cargo de Rainer Armbrust.

Esta versión transcurre en una ciudad moderna. Wotan llega apresurado al domicilio de Erda, edificio donde al parecer viven todos los personajes del Anillo. Al llegar a su casa, se quita la mascarilla, los guantes y se lava las manos, que es el nuevo rito de limpieza para prevenir el virus. Levanta la sábana de la cama donde duerme, y mientras  él prepara un café. El dúo de conjuro a la diosa de la sabiduría aquí se convierte en una discusión; y ante las evasivas de Erda, el dios termina asesinándola. Tras reflexionar y mostrarse optimista por el futuro, es decir el encuentro entre Sigfrido y Brunilda, Wotan cierra la casa y deja cuidadosamente el cuerpo de Erda en la cama, tras lo cual deja el lugar.

Lucia Lucas es una cantante transgénero estadounidense, quien tras su transición a una identidad femenina, ha podido mantener su voz masculina de barítono; con la que ha hecho una importante carrera. Ha sido la primera artista trans que ha protagonizado un montaje en su país, y ha interpretado varios roles wagnerianos y verdianos en Alemania, donde vive actualmente. Además, ha sido también la primera cantante transgénero en ser contratada por el Met de Nueva York, un pequeño rol en la ópera Billy Budd, cancelado por la pandemia. En esta ocasión interpreta a Wotan, con su estupenda voz, y momentos de un gran nivel y con algunos sonidos que recuerdan a John Tomlinson o Alan Titus, capaz de unos graves bellos, dando al personaje una capa de experiencia, autoridad propias del jefe de los dioses. 

Ariana Lucas, su esposa, es una contralto apreciable, un tono oscuro y graves aterciopelados, y una dicción exquisita, con un "Stark ruft das lied" para el recuerdo.

En aquellos días, cuando la vuelta a los teatros se aún antojaba lejana, y el mundo se detuvo, muchos artistas tuvieron a bien alegrarnos la vida con estos entremeses musicales desde la intimidad y acogida de sus domicilios. Y fue de agradecer, en esos difíciles momentos.
